I usually get the best total GPM by using each island for 2 crystals per island.

I currently have 4 islands open that I use for habitats - the initital island, the nature one above it, the fire one to the right, and then the earth-like one to the far right middle. I then created a program to place my dragons into the various habitats to try and maximize their bonuses, with preference given to dragons with higher max GPM. I tried multiple arrangements based around 2, 3, or 4 crystals on each island and recorded what the bonuses were for each crystal on each habitat for that given arrangement. I love looking at the metagame and trying to make everything as efficient as possible.

Not only that, all crystals also have a same build time and building limit to each of them (6 hours and 4 copies, respectively).

However, not all elements have their own crystal boost. For example, the Double Terra Dragon and Double Flame Dragon will get 40% gold boost from a single 'Terra Crystal' and 'Flame Crystal', respectively. Also, double element dragons will get twice the boost of the corresponding Crystal (since they have 2 times the same element).

A dragon can receive boosts from multiple crystals, as they only need to have the same element as the crystal's element. They grant a 20% increase in gold production for all dragons of the matching element in any Habitat within the radius. Crystals are a building in Dragon City, which affect dragons of the same type within a 10 and a half tiles radius and can be placed anywhere on the map.
